MultiChoice has done a great deal in customising its services for the Nigerian market. This is why a range of top content has been produced such as; Doctors Quarters, Clinic Matters, Edge of Paradise, Big Brother Nigeria, Let’s Dance, Tinsel, Naija Sings, Gladiators, Football Legends, Jara, Star Gist, 53 Extra, MultiChoice Fashion Protégé, AfricaMagic New Movies, the sponsorship of the Nigeria Basketball League and Nigeria Football League.
The passion for producing original African programmes led to the rise of Africa Magic, which now boasts eight channels, with 70% of their content being Nigerian.
Always responsive to subscribers needs, MultiChoice continues to expand its services, with a prime example of this being the development of five different channel bouquets to suit various tastes and budgets. This is testament to the organisation’s drive to constantly enhance and make products and services more accessible to more people. MultiChoice has a range of bouquet offerings with a distinct Afrocentric bias. With sights firmly set on providing an abundance of choice, spiced with a healthy mix of home-grown programmes, MultiChoice continues to host several Nigerian television and radio channels on the DStv bouquets.
These channels include NTA 2 of the Nigerian Television Authority (which has the largest network in Africa); Africa Independent Television (AIT), the nation’s first independent TV station; Channels; Murhi International Television; and Silverbird Television (STV). The radio stations include Raypower 100.5fm, Star 101.5 fm and Rhythm 93.7 fm.
MultiChoice’s support for the Nigerian and African production industry is unparalleled. This is evident in the launch of AfricaMagic, CNBC Africa, MTV Base, Ebony Life TV, Hip TV, Sound City and SuperSport Select and TBN Channels. MultiChoice’s premium channel providers are constantly on the lookout for new
content and opportunities to film on location in Nigeria using Nigerian directors, scriptwriters, cast and crew.
53 Extra, one of the programmes on M-Net, is an African-oriented social magazine programme, with regular features on Nigeria haute couture, cuisine, enterprise and entertainment. Project Fame, a hugely popular music talent programme, provided opportunities for ordinary African youth, and made Dare Art Alade an overnight superstar.
MultiChoice does not just innovate in terms of programming content. It also strives to stay at the forefront of technological developments ensuring that Nigeria is poised to bridge the digital divide. Some of the fruits of MultiChoice’s technological advancements are the Dual View decoder (a world-first) and the Personal Video Recorder (PVR) decoder.
In 2013 we launched the DStv Explora, which has taken television entertainment to new heights. The DStv Explora was named the Most Innovative Product of the Year in the satellite television category at the 2015 Product of the Year Awards. Product of the Year (POY) is the world’s largest consumer-voted award for product innovation. Established 25 years ago in France, POY currently operates in 28 countries with the same purpose: Guide consumers to the best products in their market and reward manufacturers for quality and innovation.
DStv BoxOffice is another innovation that gives subscribers the perfect excuse to plan a big family night in. Subscribers can rent any of the 20 blockbuster movies from the comfort of their own couches, and keep them for 48 hours. Remember, if you are new to BoxOffice, the first rental is on us!
The DStv Now App allows subscribers to stream their favourite channels on their smartphones. Through the App subscribers are able to stream or download their favourite programmes on their phones through the DStv Catch-Up service.
The mobile app is available to DStv Premium subscribers with a PVR or Explora decoder, on both iOS and Android tablets and mobile phones through 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi internet connections.
