The East Africa region is made up of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan, Djibouti, Eritrea, Seychelles and Somalia.
The region is one of the most dynamic regions on the continent with intense pay TV competition. In yet another move to provide DStv subscribers with the ultimate in home television entertainment, we successfully launched BoxOffice in Kenya. In terms of the migration from analogue to digital television Tanzania and Uganda have already migrated, with Kenya in the final stages. Tanzania had the privilege of hosting the 2014 CNN MultiChoice African Journalist Awards which is the most prestigious and respected award for journalists across the African continent. Kenyan photojournalist Joseph Mathenge won top honours for his photos of the 2013 terror attack at a Nairobi mall.
Uganda’s film industry named UGAWOOD is taking shape with renowned directors such as Matt Bish, Mariam Ndagire and others. Upcoming director Henry Ssali is also making a name for himself in the industry. MultiChoice Uganda held two industry stakeholder forums with AfricaMagic in the last two years which has aided in the upskilling and talent development of industry players. Our local stakeholders continue to share local production with AfricaMagic as an outlet to air their material on the channel platforms. We continue to consolidate our growth and drive sales and awareness on all platforms; DStv, GOtv, and Online. The launch of the Maisha Magic East during this year demonstrated our long term commitment to the broadcasting industry and our investment in local content. East Africa is showing tremendous growth.
The investment in state-of-the-art SuperSport and M-Net studios in Nairobi, Kenya, is the biggest contributor to this growth. The studios rank among the most advanced production facilities on the continent with a huge investment to-date to bring world-class local sport content and general entertainment shows to East Africa. Looking forward, we see opportunities with the digital migration for several countries. We also anticipate even more accelerated growth in the uptake of our services including in Digital Media. As the year unfolds, we will continue delivering on our customer promise of delivering the best entertainment anytime, anywhere on any device.
