The Kenyan online music service, Mdundo.com, is awarding the most downloaded singles for the second year in a row.
Fighitng piracy is the theme for the second edition of Mdundo Awards that will be taking place on social media in May and June this year.
Mdundo’s Head of Music, Thiru Mungai says: “The Kenyan music industry consists almost purely of illegal distribution and it is the main objective of Mdundo.com to convince the Kenyan music fans out there that downloading music legally doesn’t have to be hard or costly.”
Movies, just like music suffer from piracy and that is why DStv BoxOffice offers you Hollywood blockbusters to rent in your own convenience, and in the comfort of your couch.
This year's awards are based on the total number of downloads for each Mdundo song and are grouped into seven categories: Most downloaded hip-hop single, Afropop single, Gospel single, Male single, Female single, Group single and Most downloaded single.
The Afro Pop category has significantly grown in the last year with more and more artists creating music in this genre. This genre has also become very popular as the Kenyan sound that most artists have been trying to define. The nominees in this category are; Elani, Jaguar, Avril, H_art The Band, Victoria Kimani, Sauti Sol and Nameless.
The Hip-hop genre in Kenya has proven to be the most consistent with artists constantly producing new music and collaborating with each other. The Hip-hop genre is getting quite an increase in air play and artists are being featured more and more in the media for the content in their music that highlight popular and not-so popular societal issues. The nomiees in this category are; Octopizzo, The Kansoul, Grandpa Family, Khaligraph Jones, Mejja & Pizo Dizo, Rabbit feat Sudi.
