Kenyan born American actress Belinda Owino

Rent movies on BoxOffice and catch Lupita in Star Wars and Belinda Owino in The Hateful Eight

Kenyans are everywhere, making their presence known in the ever expanding Hollywood that is becoming more and more receptive to non-American actors.

In this month of April, three Kenyans make an appearance on BoxOffice with two movies that you cannot afford to miss on your DStv Explora.

1. Belinda Owino

Little known Kenyan actress Belinda Owino is a certified Quentin Tarantino girl. She made her debut as a background actress in the western Django Unchained before being hand-picked by Tarantino himself in his recent film, The Hateful Eight, alongside another Tarantiono resident Samuel L Jackson.

Don’t miss Belinda in action as Gemma in The Hateful Eight, which will be available for renting on BoxOffice from Thursday 28 April.

2. Lupita Nyong’o

Still a gem in Hollywood and Broadway as she stars in the highly anticipated Disney’s The Jungle Book, Lupita Nyong’o now comes to BoxOffice as Maz Kanata in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

You definitely don’t want to miss Lupita as Maz, an alien who owns a watering hole (bar) in space. Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be available for renting on BoxOffice from Monday 18 April.

3. Kiran Shah

If you thought Lupita Nyong’o was the only Kenyan in Star Wars, then you probably know nothing about Kiran Shah. Born in Nairobi, Kiran is a Kenyan-Indian actor who stars as Teedo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and has also played a stunts double in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit franchise.

Fun fact: Kiran is often confused with another Kenyan-born Indian actor Deep Roy (Star Trek and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) because of their similar diminutive sizes.

These other characters may not be Kenyan but they have rubbed shoulders with Lupita Nyong’o in one way or another.

  • Daniel Craig had a cameo appearance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as Stormtrooper JB – 007. Catch the rugged Craig as James Bond in Spectre, available for renting from Friday 8 April.
  • Michael Fassbender starred alongside Lupita Nyong’o in 12 Years a Slave. Catch him as Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in Steve Jobs, available for renting from Monday 25 April.
  • The legendary 2014 Oscar selfie that included Lupita Nyong’o among other Hollywood stars also featured Meryl Streep who you can now catch on Suffragette, available for renting from Saturday 23 April.

You can't miss out on all these April BoxOffice offerings. Visit the DStv webshop, get your DStv Explora online and start renting.
