The cast of Dr Ken.

Doctor turned actor/comedian Ken Jeong stars as the titular character Dr Ken, a brilliant physician with zero bedside manner.

Doctor turned actor/comedian Ken Jeong stars as the titular character Dr Ken, a brilliant physician with zero bedside manner, in this brand new comedy, premiering on M-Net DStv channel 101.

The laugh-a-minute series has already been renewed for a second season and will take the place of the Emmy-winning sitcom The Big Bang Theory (finale this Wednesday at 20:00) from next week Wednesday 25 May at 20:00.

Hilarious and awkward, Ken Jeong has established himself as one of today’s most notable comic stars, who now has his very own medical comedy. Known for his scene stealing abilities, the comedian dubs himself as “five foot five inches of fury” in this amusing comedy, that features Jeong’s unique brand of humour. Before he was an actor, Ken Jeong was an honest-to-goodness M.D. Now, the breakout star of The Hangover movies and TV’s Community brings medicine and laughter together.

The series follows the challenging professional life and chaotic home life of a grumpy and beleaguered physician, whose success as a husband and father is brought into question on a daily-if not hourly-basis.

Dr Ken’s loyal but oh-so-irritating support staff include Damona (Tisha Campbell-Martin, Everybody Hates Chris), a sharp tongued receptionist, Clark (Jonathan Slavin, Better Off Ted), Dr Ken’s faithful nurse, confidant and partner-in-crime, and sweet, naïve resident Julie (Kate Simses, Mixology), whose relentless optimism and quest for romance are a constant source of curiosity and exasperation. And like all great doctors, Ken has a nemesis in the form of hospital administrator Pat Hein (Dave Foley, The Middle), who never passes up on an opportunity to undermine the good physician and his staff.

Dr Ken’s family is also pretty sweet: A smart and beautiful wife, Allison (Suzy Nakamura, The Goldbergs), who still wants to have sex with him every now and then, and two decent kids, Molly (Krista Marie Yu, The Thundermans) and Dave (Albert Tsai, Fresh Off The Boat). Life would be perfect if he could only relax, get out of his own way and stop second-guessing everyone and everything. But that’s not likely to happen anytime soon!

In the series premiere, Ken finds himself stressed out at work over his "whining, complaining" patients so he schedules a therapy session with Allison. To add to his worries, Ken is nervous about Molly’s driving test, because, quote, "What if she doesn’t fail?!"

Dr Ken was written by Jared Stern, Ken Jeong and Mike O’Connell. Executive producers are Mike Sikowitz, John Davis and John Fox. Ken Jeong and Mike O’Connell are co-executive producers.

Laughter is, after all, the best medicine, so for the perfect remedy to the stresses of daily life, watch Dr Ken. Doctor’s Orders!
