Lupita Nyong’o is set to make her New York City stage debut this September.

The 32-year-old actress rose to fame in the Academy Award-winning movie 12 Years a Slave, which earned her an Academy Award for her role as Patsey.

Don't miss Lupita's phenomenal role on 12 Years a Slave on Saturday, 1 August at 23:30 on M-Net.

However, later this year, Lupita will be swapping the silver screen for the stage when she appears in an off Broadway production of The Walking Dead actress Danai Gurira’s 2010 play Eclipsed.

“Danai Gurira has written a brilliant play, ripped from the headlines, that looks at the terrible conflicts in post-colonial Africa with an eye that is both incisive and deeply compassionate,” Oskar Eustis, the theatre’s artistic director, said in a press release issued to Entertainment Weekly.

“A feminist reading of the Liberian Civil War, a war that was ended by women, Eclipsed is both heart-breaking and profoundly life-affirming. We are delighted to welcome the extraordinary Lupita Nyong’o to the Public in this vitally important play.”

Eclipsed is set during the Liberian Civil War and tells the story of a group of women who are unwillingly married to a rebel officer.

It follows these women as their lives are thrown into further chaos when a new woman arrives.

The production will be staged at The Public Theater, which has previously housed celebrity-fronted shows including Anne Hathaway in Grounded earlier this year.

Lupita is sure to be working hard on preparing for the play, which starts previews on 29 September, has its opening night on 14 October and continues until 8 November.

While the theatre role is a change in pace for Lupita, her movie career is also going from strength to strength. She will soon be seen in the highly-anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens.
