Lupita Nyong'o

Lupita in Uganda to take on her role as Harriet Mutesi, Phiona Mutesi's mother in the upcoming biopic Queen of Katwe.

Celebrated Hollywood starlet Lupita Nyong’o jetted into Uganda on Saturday, 28 March, to film Disney’s Queen of Katwe, a story about Phiona Mutesi who rose from the slums in Uganda to become a chess prodigy.

Nyongo, who’s known for her stylish simplicity, expressed her enthusiasm about coming back to her roots on her social media pages.

The Oscar winner is set to play Phiona’s mother Harriet Mutesi alongside Selma’s David Oyelowo who will play Phiona’s mentor Robert Katende.

This will be Nyongo's second biggest role after her award winning performance as Patsey in Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave, a film that became her stepping stone into Hollywood stardom.

Uganda has received its share of Hollywood fame in the past years, first with the 2006 critically acclaimed film The Last King of Scotland, based on the infamous dictator Idi Amin, and now the Queen of Katwe which will be brought to life by Indian director Mira Nair.

Queen of Katwe is certainly a movie to look out for, not only because it tells the story of a young girl's rise to fame amid obstacles but because it features Nyong'o and Oyelowo, two of Hollywood's fast rising stars.

Who knows, maybe this is another Oscar in the making?
