Matt Damon as Jason Bourne in the Bourne Collection

Don't miss the Bourne Collection on DStv Catch Up on DStv Now.

The Bourne Collection will forever remain etched in our minds as one of the best espionage film series of all time. The series is based on the character Jason Bourne (played by Matt Damon), a CIA assassin who has lost all memory and is struggling to find his recollection. In the process he has to lose love and himself to discover his remarkable abilities and his true identity. Here are some of the things you may not know about the Bourne Collection:

1. A Robert Ludlum creation

Even though the movies came out in the 2000s, the stories were already ruling the world. The Bourne film series were birthed by Robert Ludlum's book series – the first being The Bourne Identity (first released in 1980). The trilogy includes The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum.

2. A Matt Damon discovery

The Bourne Collection remains one of Matt Damon’s career standpoints. In the films, he not only plays Jason Bourne but literally lives out the exact character just how he is portrayed in the books. The Bourne series is one of his most commercially and critically successful films. He then went on to star in the Ocean’s trilogy as a gentleman pickpocketer.

3. Fifth Bourne film, maybe?

There has been a lot of anticipation and talk around when the new Bourne continuation will be shot. In the Legacy film, Matt Damon doesn’t appear in the film - only his name and images feature. However, he is expected to return in the fifth installment as a more ripped Jason Bourne.

4. Behind the concept

Many people still wonder how Robert Ludlum came up with the concept behind the Bourne series. In interviews done in the 1980s, he explained that his personal temporary amnesia inspired the theme of the film. Forgetting 12 hours of his life inspired the classic film trilogy.

5. Why the name Bourne?

It was a perfect name for a secret agent. Portrayed as a random name of a double agent, the name is inspired by the homophone “born”. During a conversation Bourne has with Carlos in the last chapter of the book the following is revealed: “To stay alive he had to get (...) away from the place where Cain [i.e. Bourne] was born. Jason Bourne ... there was no humour in the word association.”

The Bourne Collection takes the viewer through an action-packed journey. It’s a compelling psychological ride into the life of Bourne and how he fixes his own life’s puzzle. The series is also noted for its realism.
