Dancehall artist Ykee Benda is the latest sensation to come out of Uganda currently shaking the airwaves with his latest single Byonkola. He holds a comfortable spot on Uganda 10, an exclusive music countdown from Uganda on TRACE Mziki (DStv 323), alongside other talents like Maro, Eddy Kenzo and Irene Ntale.
A man after every woman’s heart, YKee Benda is easy on the eyes no doubt, but did you know that he is one of the artists representing Uganda in this year’s Coke Studio Africa? From his first hit Farmer, the "Boy so tender" has come a long way.
Here are five things that inspire us about him:
1. He studied Chemical Engineering in school
Ykee’s current focus might be in music but this 26 year old singer is a qualified Chemical Engineer, a course for which he graduated top of his class.
2. He won Breakthrough Artist and Best Collaboration at the 2017 Zzina Awards
Ykee was nominated in six categories with tough competition from artists like Radio and Weasel and Sheebah whom he shared the Best Collaboration win with for their remix Farmer.
3. He wants to be a real farmer one day
His first hit Farmer (and the remix that was to follow) is not just another song to him. Ykee said in a past interview that he would want to be an actual farmer someday; an industry that needs more vibrant young people.
4. He believes Coke Studio Africa will be a major game changer for him
Ykee said in a statement: “Being on Coke Studio this year will be a career changer for me as my music has also been hitting the airwaves strong this year. I know that the opportunity will also expose more quality Ugandan music to the world.”
5. He is a music manager
While building his name and music, Ykee is also managing another upcoming Ugandan artist, Tony Trust, whom he signed on to his label Mpaka Records.
