Dawn-Lyen Gardner plays Charley Bordelon-West on Queen Sugar.

Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey’s Queen Sugar is a celebration of the beauty and complexity of black womanhood. Queen Sugar is back on Vuzu AMP (DStv 103) from Tuesday night (29 August) at 20:00.

In this Louisiana-based drama, Nova, Charley and their Aunt Vi are often at the centre of the Bordelon family’s most important discussions. They share wisdom and step in where any of the others might fall short, setting things right with their special brand of tough love.

While each of these women is a force to be reckoned with in her own right, it is Charley Bordelon-West who seems set to cause the biggest stir. With her no-nonsense attitude, her unshakeable vision, incredible work ethic and charm, Charley will simply not be ignored. Add to that her impressive collection of power suits and dresses that say “I mean business” and you’ve got one unforgettable character.

Charley Bordelon-West is not the only good thing to come out of Louisiana. When it comes to the arts, entertainment and lifestyle, Louisiana is the gift that keeps on giving. The southern state has been the site of other acclaimed shows, such as The Originals and NCIS: New Orleans (Thursdays at 19:30 on M-Net), and The Pelican Brief (Monday, 4 September at 09:50 on M-Net Movies Action).

This State has become a desirable location for many, with the likes of Brad Pitt (The Devil’s Own, Thursday 31 August at 20:00 on M-Net Movies Action), Reese Witherspoon, Sandra Bullock (Forces of Nature, Thursday 31 August at 00:55 on M-Net Movies All Stars), Solange, and even Jay Z and Beyoncé calling Louisiana home for some parts of the year.

For those of us who cannot afford the trip to Louisiana, there is the opportunity to watch its magical capital city, New Orleans come to life in season 2 of Queen Sugar, starting Tuesday, 29 August at 20:00 on Vuzu AMP (DStv 103).
