If ever there was an era that defines the pinnacle of South African hip hop, this has to be it. This is an era where for the first time a noteworthy number of rappers are getting corporate sponsorships, constant gigging and most significantly, record sales that are worth touting about.

This year in particular has seen records sales that are going to be referred to in the future as evidence that this genre has come of age. Ifani, Riky Rick, AKA and K.O all went gold this year. Adding to this fantastic win for hip hop is also Cassper Nyovest going platinum with Tsholofelo, his debut album.

Ifani’s I Believes In Me: 2nd Quadrant

Ifani made headlines earlier this year when his 13-song album managed to sell 20 000 copies in just a day. A lot of shade was thrown about the legitimacy of the sales figures but after various interviews and interventions by his record label, the matter was laid to rest.

AKA’s Levels
AKA second album Levels also went gold this year. He added that Mr. Forbes touch by doing something special with the album and releasing a limited edition vinyl version of it.

The fans. The fam. THE KINGDOM. We did it. #LevelsForGold #LEVELSISGOLD #MissionAccomplished.
