This year in particular has seen records sales that are going to be referred to in the future as evidence that this genre has come of age. Ifani, Riky Rick, AKA and K.O all went gold this year. Adding to this fantastic win for hip hop is also Cassper Nyovest going platinum with Tsholofelo, his debut album.
Ifani’s I Believes In Me: 2nd Quadrant
Ifani made headlines earlier this year when his 13-song album managed to sell 20 000 copies in just a day. A lot of shade was thrown about the legitimacy of the sales figures but after various interviews and interventions by his record label, the matter was laid to rest.
AKA’s Levels
AKA second album Levels also went gold this year. He added that Mr. Forbes touch by doing something special with the album and releasing a limited edition vinyl version of it.
KO’s Skhanda Republic
K.O not only brought us a collabo which broke YouTube viewing records, it also went on to win the major record of the year – an award which has previously been taken by genres such as kwaito and house.Soon after that, his Skhanda Republic album went gold.
