The calm before the Stormzy

The world can sleep on him no longer.

This week Stormzy's debut album, 'Gang Signs and Prayer' became the first Grime album in history to clinch the number one spot on the UK music chart. The 23 year old rapper achieved the incredible feat by pushing just under 70 000 combined sales of the project.

But for those who may not be in the know, who is Stormzy? Born Michael Omari, the rapper is off Ghanaian descent and raised in Thornton Heath, London. His first EP dropped in 2014 and this, along with subsequent work, earned him back to back MOBO Awards wins in 2014 and 2015 for Best Grime Act.

His career may only have just begun but he's already garnered the attention of everyone from Ed Sheeran to Kanye West who called him up in 2015 to help put together the famous "All Day" performance at the Brit Awards.

Stormzy has also been vocal about his battle with depression, rapping on his album, “Like man’a get low sometimes, so low sometimes, Airplane mode on my phone sometimes, Sitting in my house with tears in my face, Can’t answer the door to my bro sometimes”. He also explained in a recent interview how, “If there’s anyone out there going through that, I think that for them to see that I went through it would help.”

This clearly only just the beginning for Stormzy and there's no doubt that the sky truly is the limit for the mandem.
