SA Musicans Mentor The Newcomers

24 December 2015
Already established artists in their own right, South Africa’s musicians are taking a number of newbies under their wings.

Mafikizolo singer Theo Kgosinkwe has a record label, and Idols contestant Melo is just the rising star he needs to kick it off. The 23-year-old was an Idols SA top 10 finalist 2013, and when she was the first to leave that elite group in the competition, she thought it was the end of her music career. But unbeknown to Melo, someone had been watching and was ready to snatch this aspiring singer to join his record company. And that person is none other than the one half of the successful duo Mafikizolo, well-known for his enticing dance moves on stage and now owner of the new music label 360 Degrees Entertainment.

If you followed the VuzuAmp TV hip hop show, Hustle you’ll know what’s good. The season’s winner Big Star Johnson and gaudy top 10 contender Shane Eagle, have collaborated to release a new single ‘Way Up.’ The song was conceived on the show for the purpose of one of the many challenges the contestants were thrown. After a nod from judges AKA and Tumi Molekane, the two reunited after the show to put it out in the real world. Eagle has gone on to be snatched up by JR’s feel good music.

A relatively unknown musician from a little known Eastern Cape town is rewriting music history books. In just a few months since the release of his debut album, Nathi Mankayi, has zoomed up the food chain to nibble on the upper crust of success. Currently, out of the 20 most downloaded songs on iTunes in South Africa, seven are from Buyel'ekhaya, his 10 track album. He is the second best selling artist at Musica record charts and the best selling local artist. He rose through the ranks after winning a talent search called Dare to Dream in the Elundi municipality in Maclear. He then worked with Jaziel Brothers as his prize, but was never released. His music ended up with Vusi Nova who took him to Muthaland Entertainment that finally released his album in April.
