How Oskido fell in love with Kwaito

03 June 2016
South African music mogul Oscar “Oskido” Mdlongwa says his inspiration for coming up with kwaito music was Robin S’ 1990 hit “Show Me Love” that he was reminded of when he was partying in Ibiza, Spain.

Robin S’ hit made it to the top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S, a rare feat for a house song at the time. According to reports, “Show Me Love” influenced cotemporary house songs. After listening to the hit, Oskido says he went on to set up Kalawa Jazmee Records that shaped the careers of the likes of award-winning 90s pop group, Boom Shaka led by the late Lebo Mathosa; Zonke; multiple award winner Professor, DJ Zinhle, Mafikizolo, Bongo Muffin, Winnie Khumalo, Dr Malinga, Unathi & Berita Khumalo.

Taking to Facebook, the famous DJ said many of his fans don’t know that the song inspired him to dream of having music that captivated the masses!

“Many people don’t know the source. When making kwaito, I was inspired by this Robin S song, Show Me Love. From there, we create a Kwaito Movement. It feels great to see the world is still appreciating this sound. Golden Rule – find your source, what inspired and ignites that magic inside of you. Dreams are possible black child.? #ThisIsIbiza? ? #?Believe?”, Oskido posted.

The OG said the song reminded him of the days he used to sell wares outside a night club in Johannesburg before he made it big.

“From Razzmatazz days selling boerewors outside the club, now hustling worldwide. I always believed it was possible. I tell my kids all that time in life DREAMS can be a reality. Whatever your dream, GO FOR IT! Now hustling NEW frontiers – Ibiza, Spain #MusicIsMyLife”, he posted.
