The alternative R&B album initially hit retailers on October 2, 2015 and quietly moved 24,000 units its first week, reaching #2 on Billboard’s R&B chart. Since its release, the album has seen a consistent ascension of sales, prompting a 34-city headlining tour in 2016 and two sold out appearances at New York’s 6,000-capacity Radio City Music Hall.

On October 9, 2014, a 21-year-old Tiller released his single “Don’t” via SoundCloud. The single has reached platinum status and amassed over 100 million views on YouTube since its release in August 2015.

In their beginnings, “Don’t” and Pen Griffey – a self-given moniker alluding to his hit-making ability – were the main interests of the hip-hop and R&B blogosphere. Tiller’s work garnered praises from hip-hop’s elite including Timbaland and Drake. The 6 God extended an offer to sign the budding singer/songwriter, but he ultimately signed with RCA Records.

Before Tiller was able to make music his full-time occupation, he made a living working at UPS and Papa John’s and dabbled in music on the side. Frustrated with the lack of local producers able to create fitting tracks for his style, Tiller employed tactics that many up and comers are all too familiar with: downloading instrumentals from YouTube and low-cost or free tracks from Soundclick – an online community reminiscent of the early music MySpace. He unashamedly admits that he found the beat for “Don’t” on the site.

To be sure, Tiller’s subsequent singles have yet to reach the same pinnacle as his lead single, and he is rarely featured on other artists’ records. However, with a platinum plaque in-hand Tiller’s show rate will likely see an increase.
