Day 52: Beats for the Big Brother house – BBTitans

News
08 March 2023
It’s “music madness” this week on Big Brother Titans – so what’s flipping the housemates’ headphones out?
Burna Boy in front of name tag

Blue Aiva says she digs Afrobeats, but she's never met a song she didn't like. The girl is a dancing dynamo and the mirrors in the house have taken strain. No complaints here.

Ipeleng has major advantages this week, so maybe we can send Damini in for just one more?! Pure fire. 🔥 Burna Boy understood the assignment: Afrobeat (basically the Kutis: Fela, Femi, Seun) and Afrobeat are not that radically different, but they happened decades apart. So: remix. Following multiple nominations, Burna took home the awards for Best Global Album GRAMMY for ‘Sakura’ in 2021. Colour us unsurprised.

Burna Boy – 'Last Last':

Burna Boy – ‘Ye’:

Khosi and Ipeleng may have him at the top of their list too, but Lukay had a soft spot for the Naija hitmaker (perhaps contributing to many of his and Ipeleng’s er “soft spots”).

Ebubu is up next with his essential selection – and it’s one he shares with Miracle OP.

It's not just the grill, but the bars … Nasty C didn’t mess around getting into the rap game: from a young age he was crunching crisps with Davido and crunching rhymes with Cassper Nyovest. And he seems to have emerged fully formed. That damn fur coat didn’t do any harm either ...

Asake is supadopefresh – just ask Justin. Collabs with Tiwa Savage, Olamide and Burna Boy? Accomplished. London tour: done and dusted.

And he's certainly not scared of a touch of amapiano either.

Wizkid is a Tsatsii fave. The Peter Pan of Naija pop? Forget the on-my-way bona fides: head straight to Drake, Justin Bieber, Trey Songz, Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncè …

Nasty C and Kwesta

With “Ngud’”, Kwesta revolutionised SA hip hop. Nasty C dipped his toes into that self-same water. Blaqboi reveres both… a proper rap fan through-and-through.

Oh, hang on: who produced “Ngud"? That'd be DJ Maphorisa, and Kanaga Jnr knows that score – and no doubt how pivotal amapiano is to … Well, everything these days.

While Thabang isn't pinning himself down to genres or artists just yet (put it on list, peeps), Nana will take Nicki Minaj any day of the week (ask her when she's out – "if you can't handle my worst, you ain't getting my best.”).

Finally, Yvonne, doesn't know about Beyoncé’s latest feat: a record-shattering 32nd Grammy Award win. But she's not gonna unsurpried.

There are lots of truths, special and tragic, awaiting our housemates soon – but great music lives forever, fam x
