Fatherhood is a journey filled with love, laughter, and a deep sense of responsibility. As we celebrate Father's Day, we had the privilege of sitting down with some of Ghana's beloved celebrity fathers to hear their experiences and insights.
Elikem Kumordzie
Akwaaba Magic (AM): What is your favourite thing about being a dad?
Elikem Kumordzie (EK): My favorite thing about being a dad is the urgency I get knowing that I have offsprings I’m responsible for. It makes me up and go with no complains. I have to become successful so my children can have a much better life and more greater opportunities.
AM: What activities do you enjoy doing with your child(ren)?
EK: I love outdoor and indoor activities simultaneously, depending on which child, I love to cook with my children and I like to go into the bushes and play rough games, climbing of trees, jumping off cliffs, just to toughen the boys up a little bit.
AM: What’s your go-to dad joke that always gets a laugh (or not) 
from your kid(s)?
EK: My kids are young so I don’t tell jokes, I play around with them a lot, tickling them gets them laughing alot, throwing them around and being jumpy also gets them laughing a lot.
AM: If you could switch places with your child for a day, what would you do?
EK: If I could switch places, I’ll play games all day with. O worries, eat and sleep on my mums breast .
AM: How do you balance your career and being a dad?
EK: Easy! I let my kids come to my place of work everyday after school, so that I get to spend time with them and keep an eye on them every time. I also schedule intentionally days where I either travel out of town with them and spend undivided time.
AM: What’s the best advice you’ve received about fatherhood?
EK: Best advice I’ve gotten thus far is to be intentional with being a great father and paying attention to changes in your child’s life, because all evolve; and at each stage if you are observant as a father, you are able to direct or redirect your child’s trajectory towards a more successful end.
Adjetey Anang
Akwaaba Magic (AM): What is your favourite thing about being a dad?
Adjetey Anang (AA): When I get to make time and spend time with him doing what he loves to do, his smile & joy lights up my day!
AM: What activities do you enjoy doing with your child(ren)?
AA: Playing games; FIFA on the Play Station, football outdoors, listening to music and singing along etc.
AM: What’s your go-to dad joke that always gets a laugh (or not) from your kid(s)?
AA: I'm not the best at telling jokes.
AM: If you could switch places with your child for a day, what would you do?
AA: I would forget about the responsibilities of life, sit or lie in the sofa all day, watch cartoons, play Spider-Man and Legoworld video games and only get up to get a snack or use the bathroom.
AM: How do you balance your career and being a dad?
AA: Prioritising my daddy role helps me control the endless extra demands my career makes on me.
AM: What’s the best advice you’ve received about fatherhood?
AA: The choices you make will directly affect your child. The sequences and patterns build their reality and they model their lives after that. Make sure these are worthy of emulation,
Bill Asamoah
Akwaaba Magic (AM): What is your favourite thing about being a dad?
Bill Asamoah (BA): My favourite is waking up to a healthy family full of life, and together, we hold hands to thank our Maker every day.
AM: What activities do you enjoy doing with your child(ren)?
BA: I enjoy helping them do their homework anytime I am around.
AM: If you could switch places with your child for a day, what would you do?
BA: Switching a place with my son in a day would have me celebrating my birthday and having to be pampered all day long amidst cake and toffees all over me.
AM: How do you balance your career and being a dad?
BA: Discipline, time management, and making every minute count.
AM: What’s the best advice you’ve received about fatherhood?
BA: Best advice is Not getting too comfortable at home, but stepping out to work so the family is well taken care of.
Michael Katahena
Akwaaba Magic (AM): What is your favourite thing about being a dad?
Michael Katahena (MK): My favourite thing about being a dad is watching my children grow through the various stages of development. From being born as tiny helpless babies to strong running energetic youngsters to teens or young adults. It's priceless! But then...carrying your own baby in your hands for the first time...nothing beats that, for me.
AM: What activities do you enjoy doing with your child(ren)?
MK: As toddlers I loved playing and rolling on the floor with them, reading storybooks to them, playing and watching football with them. As older kids now in their late teens and early twenties...it's the conversations and exchange of ideas.
AM: What’s your go-to dad joke that always gets a laugh (or not) from your kid(s)?
MK: One washed out joke on funny accents I inherited from my dad and told a hundred times over and over.
AM: If you could switch places with your child for a day, what would you do?
Probably watch as many movies and download as much music as they do. I just can't keep up with their energy.
AM: How do you balance your career and being a dad?
I've tried as much as possible to be a real dad in every sense of the word...not an absentee dad over the years. Whether my efforts were good enough to merit a good score, I don't think it's for me to say or judge. They (kids) would be the best judges.
AM: What’s the best advice you’ve received about fatherhood?
Be the best example you can ever be to your children because most times you are a template the children might base their lives on. Moreso, because every father/dad is their child or children's first hero.
Prince David Osei
Akwaaba Magic (AM): What is your favourite thing about being a dad?
Prince David Osei (PDO): Knowing that I can always take care of my kids, I can be there for them and the thought that I've brought my kind into the world are my favourite things about being a dad. Also knowing I am responsible for their upbringing and making sure they attain the highest heights.
AM: What activities do you enjoy doing with your child(ren)?
PDO: I enjoy playing with my kids, especially the girls - running around the house, they climbing on my back, playing football with them sometimes. My son is very competitive so most times, we do the fitness game, where I challenge him to do push-ups. We run around the basement, I tell them jokes and they ask a thousand and one questions in one minute. That fascinates me.
AM: What’s your go-to dad joke that always gets a laugh (or not) from your kid(s)?
PDO: When I call my girls 'baby' and their mother goes, "So who's your baby?", and when I call my wife "baby", the girls go, "Daddy, but I'm also your baby!" What evokes laughter is when my youngest daughter who is six years old calls me "PDO baby." 🤣
AM: If you could switch places with your child for a day, what would you do?
PDO: I'm going to have fun all day, not worry about the bills, just play and have a good time because I would not be responsible for anything!
AM: How do you balance your career and being a dad?
PDO: Most times, I'm in Ghana and my kids stay in the United States of America, so here's how we do it - every now and then we're on a video call and when I wake up in the morning, I greet them, but sometimes they'll be sleeping because of the time difference. Before they go to school, I call them and pray with them, as soon as they get back from school, they call me and I update them on my schedule for the day, maybe on set filming or traveling. They update me on things happening in school and I update them on what I get up to daily; every now and then we text and hop on video calls.
AM: What’s the best advice you’ve received about fatherhood?
Your kids are your seeds, they're a replica of you. You're responsible for them, they didn't beg to come into this world, you brought them into this world and you need to cater for them, care for them, love them and be responsible for their welfare and security.
James Gardiner
Akwaaba Magic (AM): What is your favourite thing about being a dad?
James Gardiner (JG): I don't think I can narrow it down to one, but the whole idea of bringing new life into the world is absolutely beautiful. Even though they may be young, they still look up to you. When I pick up the remote, my son comes to investigate to see what I'm up to. For me, being an exemplary is key and my favourite thing about being a dad is bringing life to this earth.
AM: What activities do you enjoy doing with your child(ren)?
JG: My son is an outgoing person which is funny because he's quite young. He loves going to the park, loves the slides, playing grounds with machines and toys. Our favourite thing to do will be the waterpark or the swimming pool. He loves water, and just the beam of smiles when he's doing these activities gives me joy. When he's happy, I'm happy.
AM: What’s your go-to dad joke that always gets a laugh (or not) from your kid(s)?
JG: He likes it when I make the sound of the chicken. (*inserts sound - puk-puk-pukuaaa) 🐔
AM: If you could switch places with your child for a day, what would you do?
JG: With him being me, I would scatter the whole house, create the same mess and cry as loud as he does in the middle of the night and do all the naughty things he does whenever I'm tired, back home from work and I just want to rest.
AM: How do you balance your career and being a dad?
JG: My son is currently schooling in London, so I try as much as possible to be in his face at all times - calling on FaceTime when I get the chance, because when I'm on set things get really busy and time goes pretty fast. Until he comes down for summer or any other break, tt's mostly calls and video chats when he comes back from school or after church service on weekends.
AM: What’s the best advice you’ve received about fatherhood?
JG: There are a lot but my key ones would be being present in a child's life and make sure you're not an absentee. Make sure you're part of the child's life because there are very core moments where the child will pick up that you have no control over. Whether it is him graduating from kindergarten or him playing soccer or any games, make sure you're a part of it. Also, you need a lot of patience when dealing with kids,especially babies, so make sure you're patient with them and just be very present - these are key.
