It’s Art Verse week in the house. 🎨 Naturally, this means Biggie has tasked the housemates with creating art that they’ll show off in an exhibition they need to put together by the end of the week. They’ll also have to write a poem that will weave together the narratives and themes of their art pieces. And there’s yet another layer to the challenge!
In a bid to make their work more sustainable, the housemates have to use reclaimed materials to create their fashion pieces. But they shouldn’t be too stressed about this. There’s plenty of precedent for creating art out of waste materials. Just take a look at these artists and their incredible creations.
Sokari Douglas Camp
Born in Nigeria and based in London, Camp makes large-scale sculptures from reclaimed metal, primarily using steel. This visionary artist focuses on the impact of industrialisation on traditional African societies. Her work is celebrated in permanent collections around the world including those of the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art in Washington DC, the Setagaya Art Museum in Tokyo, and the British Museum in London.
Ifeoma U Anyaeji
Anyaeji also makes sculptures, but uses plastic instead of metal. The sculptor has dubbed it “plasto-art”. She repurposes discarded plastic bags and bottles and uses the traditional Nigerian hair-plaiting technique ikpa owu to form her creations. Through her work, she seeks to raise awareness about global plastic pollution, as well as uphold traditional African aesthetics.
Adejoke Lasisi
The housemates’ challenge includes making outfits from recycled materials and that’s just what this fashion designer does. Through her textile company Planet 3R (the Rs stand for reduce, reuse, and recycle.), Lasisi spins plastic yarn out of shredded plastic water sachets. Blending it with a bit of cotton, the results include stunning slippers, skirts, bags, and table mats.
What creations will the housemates produce? Will the drama prove too distracting? There’s a 100% of their wager at stake, so they’ll need to rally and find some way of collaborating.
