Emem
Emem is Anie’s childhood friend and a fellow member of the Daughters of Water. Gentle, practical, and quietly hopeful, she represents the possibility of a life beyond the village. A graduate of Agricultural Education, Emem currently teaches children in the community while preparing for the next chapter of her life.
She has just secured a long-awaited position at the Ministry of Education in Abuja and is scheduled to leave the village immediately after the Ukang ceremony. This ceremony is meant to be her final obligation as a Daughter of Water, marking her transition from tradition-bound life to personal freedom.
Among the group, Emem stands out for her sincerity and emotional openness. She is one of the few people, alongside Anie’s grandmother, who truly understands Anie and can reach her on an emotional level. She knows Anie’s weaknesses, her fears, and her “mumu button,” and is unafraid to call her out when necessary.
