During the first round of Theatre Week, viewers were left in suspense as the Nigerian Idol hopefuls were sent to different rooms to await the decision of the Judges. Last night, however, many heaved a sigh of relief as it was revealed that those in room 1 had all qualified for the next round. Those in room 2, however, were not as fortunate as they were all told their journey had ended.
Room 3 was regarded as a “room of mixed feelings” by the Judges, as they announced to all in the room that some of the contenders were selected while others weren’t. So, there were literally mixed feelings in the room, as some celebrated while others felt sad that their journey had come to an end.
For the second round, the contestants were paired in twos and asked to select a song to practise over 24 hours. Here, their ability to perform excellently in a duet was put to the test. From the pairing, some of the contestants complained about their partner and their inability to work together as a team.
One of the contestants who complained was Jitey, she expressed her concern about her inability to blend well with her partner. She admitted that they were both excellent singers individually, but not together.
Precious and Chisom were the first pair to perform. They chose ‘Sinner’ by Adekunle Gold and Lucky Daye, practising with vocal coach Malie Kelly. Viewers expressed online how they noticed the spark between the two, claiming they did absolutely well with their performance.
In front of the judges, Obi Asika, D’banj and Simi, the duo gave a fantastic performance that received commendations. Simi chided Chisom for being nervous and not looking at them. However, commending their ability to work together to give a good performance and both of them went through to the next round.
Chris and Isioma, also combined well to move to the next round after they both delivered a superb performance in front of the judges. Azuka and Kelvin were next, but they did not impress the judges at all with their performance. They failed to work well as a team, which showed in the way they sang. After a string of duets that impressed the judges, the duo was the first to be asked to leave.
La Mood and Collins also struggled to convince the judges of their ability to work together. However, for Collins, the judges managed to be impressed and he got to move to the next round while La Mood who had complained about her partner’s mood affecting hers, was asked to leave.
Match not-made in heaven
Progress and Debby sang ‘You are the Reason’ by Calum Scott and Leona Lewis, and despite Debby being under the weather, the judges complimented their chemistry. Both got a pass to the next round.
Remii and Ochiora combined to sing 'Jealous' by Labrinth and did an excellent job with the song. They both played the guitar and blended well with ease earning high praise from the judges. Both got to move on to the next round.
Itohan and Jordan were a perfect match, as the judges stood up to applaud their performance. Simi urged them not to stop singing and said she hoped they would continue to do well. Their duet was one of the best for the night, which got them to move on to the next round.

Eyo and Ikemefuna did not go to the next round, as they didn’t get to impress the judges with their performance. According to the judges, they did not perform well, it seemed as if they just wanted to be over and done with the performance. They weren’t enjoying it.
Wisdom and Banti sang ‘Comforter’s Song’ by Jeremiah Gyang and Asa. The judges said only one of them brought energy to the stage. Banti moved to the next round, but Wisdom wasn’t so lucky.

Joel and Mathew struggled while practising for their duet and it seemed like they would not do well on stage. The judges noted that they did not “gel well”. Despite that, they did enough to convince the judges to have them moved to the next round.
Abigail and Gerald were the last pair to perform in the first round of theatre week and they delivered an eye-catching performance that wowed the judges. They closed the curtain with a beautiful duet that earned them both a pass to the next round.
