The Level Up Housemates are proud of their Nigerian heritage, and they are always eager to express it in the best way possible.
Housemates

Nigerian culture is a huge part of Big Brother Naija. The food, the people, songs, art, and other forms of expression have all played a big role in how each season plays out and this season is no different. This week the theme in Biggie’s House is My Nigeria: Tribute to Nigerian cultural heritage. From this, we can deduce that the Housemates will wrap up their time in the Level Up House with a proper Naija experience.

In the Level Up season, there have been moments where we enjoyed Naija culture in its richness and beauty. Let's take a look at some of the moments where the Naija spirit shined as bright as the sun.🌞

Housemates pay tribute to men and women of service

The service to humanity Task

When the Levels were merged, the first Wager Task won involved the Housemates paying tribute to men and women who dedicate their lives to the service and betterment of humanity. This feat was achieved with the incorporation of traditional Nigerian songs and dance into their presentation. The display of colourful costumes, amazing dance steps and beautiful traditional music provided by Biggie and the Housemates gave credence to the presence of the indefatigable Naija spirit in the House.

Jollof rice Task

If there is any meal that brings all Nigerians together, it is Jollof, a rice-based meal originally from Senegal with tomatoes, onions, spices, vegetables and meat in a single pot. It has since taken, a new identity in Nigeria and is now a staple at festivities in the country. The Housemates had the chance to show off their Jollof-making skills as they prepared the dish to win mouth-watering prizes.

The Afrofuturism Task

Afrofuturism Task

In the Afrofuturism Wager week, Biggie helped us take a peep into the future of Nigeria and how much our culture could play a large role in its advancement. Once again, Nigerian culture shined through as cultural elements were integrated into fictional technological devices put together by the Level Up Housemates.

Housemates rock to Naija music

Musical moments

Noticed how pumped the Housemates get whenever they clean up the House in the morning, party at the poolside, or in the party room? One factor that ties these moments together is contemporary Nigerian music. The Aafrobeats movement is a force this season and we are feeling it. Nigerian music has kept the Housemates company through good and bad times and has become a defining factor that lets Housemates and viewers key into the Naija experience.

Moments of self-expression

“Who dey..?”, “commot body jor!” and “ omo” are examples of phrases and Pidgin English that are a recognisable part of Nigerian culture. Developed from a combination of Portuguese, Dutch, English, and various local languages, Pidgin English has served as an informal lingua franca for Nigerians and is the easiest form of communication that cuts across the vast majority of its people. Thanks to Biggie, the Housemates are free to use it as a form of communication giving the Housemates more opportunities to express themselves.

The Naija spirit makes BBNaija a unique experience and we are sure this will not be changing anytime soon.
