After the palace healer delivered a grim prophecy that the king had just three days to live, Aremu returned with Wura and proceeded to set his sinister plan in motion. He brought in a fearsome witch from a neighbouring village to bend Wura’s will and force her to heal the king.
Wura heals the King
Under the witch’s charm, Wura became a zombie who did everything she was told. The witch commanded her to heal the dying king, and she did—but at a devastating cost. Immediately, the king woke up, full of strength. Wura collapsed, and the illness transferred into her body, affecting her and her unborn child. Aremu, Olori Awero, and the entire king’s camp erupted in wild celebration as they were thrilled he was finally hale and hearty, and that their battle to prove his legitimacy was finally over but more drama ensued!
Ayoni’s revenge
Mid-celebration, the witch sensed danger, and moments after, Aremu and Olori Awero fell, writhing and vomiting blood. They had been poisoned by Ayoni, who revealed she had overheard a chilling conversation: the witch, noticing Ayoni’s pregnancy, had demanded her unborn child, who also possessed rare healing powers, as payment to help Aremu with his plans. Aremu instantly agreed without hesitation; he even revealed that to him, Ayoni was just a mere tool to get what he wanted. Such a betrayal from a man she called husband, and hurt her sister for, shattered Ayoni, and she was set on vengeance.
The witch takes a bow
Although she was able to save herself with incantations and vomited out the poison, Ayoni still wanted her gone and approached her with a knife in hand. The witch tried to charm Ayoni, who had put oil-soaked cotton in her ears to resist the spell, but pretended to act as if it worked. Just as the witch ordered her to hand over the knife, she lunged and instantly stabbed her. The witch dropped dead, stunned that her magic was useless.
A final act of love
To cover her tracks, Ayoni set part of the palace ablaze, creating chaos. She slipped into the holding cells and freed Bangbola, Wura, Monisola, and the others. But just as they were escaping, Ayoni’s labour began. Weak but determined, Wura delivered Ayoni’s child.
In a heartbreaking moment, Ayoni handed over her baby and whispered for Wura to protect the child. She chose to stay behind, as someone had to pay for the crimes, or the king would never stop hunting them. The following day, the king addressed his people with a heavy heart. He recounted Ayoni’s actions but also acknowledged a deeper truth: all this bloodshed had been born from the greed and evil tied to the Abobaku tradition.
In a historic declaration, he sentenced Ayoni to death and abolished the Abobaku practice forever.
