A Serious Laughing Matter, The Arrival of the DStv Comedy Circuit!!!

In an unprecedented first, DStv makes a proud announcement of its support for the growth and development of South African Comedy with the establishment of the DStv Comedy Circuit that will commence from the end of June 2009. This will be a nationwide circuit of club venues where South African comedians such as Riaad Moosa, Mel Miller, Trevor Noah, Chris Forrest, Loyiso Gola, Kagiso Lediga, Kurt Schoonraad, Kedibone Mulaudzi, Eugene Khoza, Joey Rasdien, Darren Maule and many other seasoned pro’s will perform on a weekly / monthly basis alongside up and coming comedy talent.

Colleen Goodman, DStv Marketing Manager says, ‘South Africans have a unique sense of humour and a great appetite to see their own brand of home brewed comedy. Live stand-up comedy is becoming increasingly popular in SA, with local comedians showcasing their talents through various mediums and forms of media as well as amusing audiences both nationally and internationally and as DStv we are proud to help stimulate this industry.’

The comedy club phenomenon has always been the lifeblood of any established comedy industry as is evidenced in the USA and the UK. This is where comedians young and old, experienced and starting up get to hone their craft, engage with audiences and fans, stumble across new material and develop as comics. In an initiative to “Bring Stand Up Comedy to the people’ DStv will support a circuit that includes 10 regular comedy venues round the country where people can see South Africa’s own ‘Chris Rock’s” and ‘Dane Cook’s strutting their stuff.

“Comedians need places to perform and hone their material and I’m glad DStv is helping to build a circuit”, said award winning comedian Trevor Noah. Another award winning comedian, Loyiso Gola believes the comedy circuit will greatly assist in making South Africa’s comedy talent more accessible to audiences all over the country. “It’s the recession, people need to have a laugh” said one of the country’s most lauded and experienced comedians, Mel Miller.
