Twilight director: Script was horrible
By Bang Showbiz | Wed, 08 Feb 2012

Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke thought the original script for the film was "horrible".

The filmmaker helmed the first episode in the vampire movie franchise - starring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart - but was initially put off by the script, and only agreed to make it after reading the original novel by Stephenie Meyer.

She told New York Magazine, "I thought the script was horrible, but then I looked it up on the internet and I thought, 'OK, it's based on a book and people tend to like it. There's gotta be something there'.

"So I read the book and I thought it captured that feeling of being madly in love. And I thought, 'That's kind of a good challenge, to see if, as a filmmaker, I could make you feel that giddy, crazy'."

Catherine only agreed to direct the film if the studio, Summit, let her rewrite the script.

Robert - who plays vampire Edward Cullen in film series - has previously said his character was written so well he personally can relate to the feelings of love he has in the film.

He said, "I guess I must be [like him] because everyone is always telling me that Edward is kind of old-fashioned, but I always see him as fairly normal. I mean, he just knows what he wants.

"He's in love with someone and he just likes the idea of getting married to them. I guess I kind of agree with that."
