Star Trek and DC Universe geeks are now able to play in their respective online virtual worlds for free, thanks to new subscription and non-subscription player options added to DC Universe Online Star Trek Online.
DC Universe Online and Star Trek Online are two massively multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPGs) that allow hundreds of thousands of players around the world to play the games together online.
In Star Trek Online, players start their way at the bottom of the galactic food chain, with a small ship and crew. As you travel through the universe exploring strange new worlds, building relationships, completing missions and trading commodities, you gain experience and virtual currency, which all contributes toward better equipment and crews for your ships.
With the option to play as any one of dozens of alien species (and even as the Klingons later in the game), it’s the ideal way for Trek geeks to live out their wildest fantasies without having to wait another 200 years for it to actually come about.
DC Universe Online is similar, giving players the opportunity to create their own superhero and take on the forces of good or evil based on which side they decide to support. There are chance run-ins with some of the big names form the DC universe and some epic battles. The question is, what will your powers be and will you use them to save the world, or destroy it?
While Star Trek Online was released in 2010 and DC Universe Online earlier in 2011, the games both still enjoy a growing online gaming base, and the hope is that the free-to-play options will attract more players who will later become paying players.
Players who are currently paying a subscription fee to play these games will have access to exclusive features and content, which are either not available to, or are purchasable by free players.
Subscriptions vary, but are in the range of $14,99 (US) per month if player choose to access the additional content.
Good news. But be warned. Like drugs, the first hit is always free. Addiction follows quickly, which is why many MMORPGs have been called “marriage enders”.
