Whip out the strawberries and cream – it’s time for Wimbledon!
While the oldest tennis tournament in the world draws millions of viewers every year, we’re always curious about who’s made it to the matches in person. For us, stargazing has almost become a sport of its own!
Pictured above right, Gwen Stefani and hubby Gavin Rossdale are loyal supporters of Roger Federer, and attend regularly with the tennis player's wife, Miroslava Vavrinec.
Whether it’s their love for the game, their support of a countryman, or the chance to rub shoulders with royalty, celebrities are sure to flock to Centre Court.
Over the years, we’ve seen all manner of famous sorts taking their seats at the All England Tennis and Croquet Club. From movie stars and sports stars to the “It” names of fashion and music – and, if we’re (very) lucky, even dukes, princes and queens.
We’ve picked out a few of the more famous fans who have graced the courts of Wimbledon over the past few years. Who would you like to see find their way back to Centre Court this year?
Queen Elizabeth II took her seat in the Royal Box during a visit to Wimbledon in 2010. This was Her Majesty’s first visit to the tournament in more than 30 years, and caused quite a stir.
The newlywed glow was evident when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge showed up to support their countryman Andy Murray in 2011. Kate even encouraged Prince William to join in the Mexican wave with the rest of the crowd.
Nothing says star power quite like Ben Stiller and wife Christine Taylor, Michael Caine, Russell Crowe, Woody Allen and Ralph Lauren spotted during the final between Andy Roddick and Roger Federer in 2009.
Last year hip-hop mogul Jay-Z arrived to watch the match between Rafael Nadal and Juan Del Potro. Recently he visited Roland Garros for another of Nadal’s matches and we know he is currently on tour in Europe. Will he perhaps bring his wife as his plus one this year?
Über-Supreme Diana Ross and her son, former
90210
star Evan Ross, rocked up to see Serena Williams in action.
It was a father and son day when David and Brooklyn Beckham came out to support Scotland’s Andy Murray in 2009.
Ron Weasley brought his magic to the Royal Box. Well, not really, but Rupert Grint did. The
Harry Potter
actor and his on-screen brother Oliver Phelps took in some Wimbledon action in the match between Andy Roddick and Feliciano Lopez.
Harry Potter
actor Alan Rickman joined F1 superstar Jenson Button and his girlfriend for the men’s final between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in 2011.
They know something about hitting a ball! Cricket greats Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara checked into the Royal Box to watch Serena Williams cruise to victory in 2010.
No way did you think tennis greats leave the court! Martina Navratilova and Sir Richard Branson kept each other company last year, while watching Petra Kvitova defeat Victoria Azarenka in their semifinal match.
Anne Hathaway and Condoleeza Rice shimmied into the women’s final in 2011, where Petra Kvitova beat Maria Sharapova.
You can catch all the Wimbledon action on SuperSport 7 daily.
