What's (not) weird about William Shatner?
Thirosha Pillay | Mon, 02 Jul 2012
William Shatner has always gravitated toward slightly different roles. So it's no surprise that the multi-talented sci-fi legend will be presenting
Weird or What?
the brand new show on Discovery Channel.
Every Monday evening, he'll be boldly exploring mysteries and strange happenings that no one has explored before... at least, no one quite like Bill Shatner.
Before he started testing scientific theories in
Weird or What?
we knew him best as the iconic character, Captain James T Kirk from Star Trek.
We might also recognise him from his somber role in Rescue 911, from his hilariously surly character in $h*! My Dad Says... or even from his Heather-Locklear-bossing-around days in
No? Well then you've got to remember his cigar smoking, scotch swilling, gun shooting portrayal of off the wall attorney Denny Crane in the comedy-drama Boston Legal.
Shatner was born in Montreal, Canada and is a learned Shakespearean actor. He made his Broadway debut in late 1956 and went on to star in a myriad of theatre, film and movie productions.
Here are some weird and wonderful facts about William Shatner:
He shared what is known as TV's first interracial kiss with African American actress Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) in an episode of Star Trek.
An online casino bought Shatner's kidney stone for $25 000. We're not sure what's weirder, the idea that someone paid that much money for it, or the fact that he thought of selling it in the first place. But let's not judge too harshly, he donated the full amount to charity. Good old Uncle Bill.
After Star Trek was cancelled in 1969, Shatner hit something of a slump and for a while lived in a makeshift caravan and accepted any acting work that came his way. Fortunately, his star soon rose again.
On March 7, 2011, astronauts on board the Space Shuttle Discovery awoke to the sound of, Shatner's voice, speaking over the familiar theme song from the original
Most recently, South Africans might have been surprised to see him in Denny Crane mode, lobbing tennis balls in a local Dial Direct commercial.
Shatner boldly explains the inexplicable in
Weird or What?
on Monday, 2 July at 23:15 on Discovery SA.
