Being 'Gay' in the industry
Somizi's right moves for Channel O MVAs

Acclaimed choreographer Somizi Mhlongo - affectionately known by his fans as SomGAGA, in part because of his crazy fashions - is making all the right moves at this year’s
Channel O Music Video Awards
brought to you by DStv and DStv Mobile.
The entertainer has been named as the official choreographer for this year’s event, taking place on Saturday, 17 November at Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown, Soweto.
Somizi can't contain his excitement and appreciates the creative freedom to express his creativity for the benefit of the show and take it to the next level.
"For me it's been a long time coming, being a fan and watching the awards ceremony for the past 6 years and having won a Channel O Music Video award for Best Choreography when they were held at the Civic Theatre.
Honestly speaking, I even wrote an email to someone asking if there was an opportunity I would really, really love to be a part of it, because I saw an opportunity for me creatively as well to do something different. I have been in the business for over 25 years and this is one of, if not the only show I have not been a part of that I have always wanted to be involved in," says Somizi.
With the details of the live event still firmly under wraps, Somizi is keeping his creative take on the 2012 Channel O Music Video Awards close to his chest.
"It's not only about taking Africa to the future technologically, its about truly working towards uniting Africa and the Channel O Music Video Awards are the only awards show that unify Africa and I am excited to be a part of that. All I can say is the aim is not just to entertain, but to unify," adds Somizi.
But music fans across the continent can expect a thrilling spectacle of dance woven into the incredible live music performances that have now become a signature part of the continent’s only Original African music awards event.
Somizi, the son of the late comedian Ndaba Mhlongo and veteran actress Mary Twala, has more than proven his considerable and varied on-stage chops over the many years that he’s been a part of the South African entertainment scene.
Whether it’s musical theatre (which forms a significant part of his background) or choreographing for music videos and live productions, appearing on television and even creating his own music, Somizi has a flair for eye-catching and head-popping moves that always capture the spirit of the times.
There is just a month to go until voting in Africa’s only public-voted awards event closes and close to six weeks until Africa’s finest gather to see who takes this year’s crown. Don’t miss out!
