Created by stage and screen writer Theresa Rebeck, and with Steven Spielberg as an executive producer, Smash takes centre stage on M-Net Series tonight and it looks like we’ll be a rapt audience.

Smash looks at the drama (more offstage than on) surrounding a Broadway cast as they rehearse a mammoth musical take on Marilyn Monroe’s life. With Anjelica Huston, Debra Messing and Jack Davenport at the helm, this is going to be the musical television extravaganza of the year. The runaway success of Glee has made it clear that we love a little song on screen, and while we wait for the curtains to rise on Smash, it seems a perfect time to jazz things up, toss the glitter and look back at the five greatest (and most unexpected) musical moments in television series.
