BoxOffice review: The Girl with the Dragon...
One last job
Joseph Mosselson | Fri, 20 Jul 2012
If you’re a career criminal, you can never retire. Not only is it hard to find a career in criminality that offers a good pension scheme but, when you decide to pack it all in, your last job is all but guaranteed to go horribly wrong.
Such is the case in
(available on DStv BoxOffice from Mon 16 Jul to Mon 20 Aug), where retired smuggler Chis Farraday is blackmailed into doing one last job in order to save his brother’s life. To be fair to Chris, he had already retired before falling into the trap of “one last job”.
And, to be even fairer, he’s in some pretty good company:
One last job in the Old West
, gunslinger William Munny is lured out of retirement to hunt down a couple of cowboys and collect a bounty.
One last job with a variety of twists and turns
In a play on the formula,
sees aging master thief Nick Wells (Robert De Niro) teaming up with brash newcomer Jack Teller (Edward Norton).
Nick wants to retire and run his jazz club, while Jack is looking to make a name for himself. Turns out there’s no honour among thieves and even less when there’s a generation gap involved.
One last job with fantastically verbose dialogue
Playwright David Mamet enjoys the occasional screenplay, and he brings a certain theatrical quality to
Gene Hackman stars as jewel thief and wannabe retiree Joe Moore; the plotting is Machiavellian, the dialogue is decidedly Shakespearean and Joe's retirement is anything but utopian.
One last job with cars
The outlaws of
The Fast and the Furious
have been trying to retire for about four films now. They get another shot in
, and actually pull of the heist that will secure their futures.
However, something (possibly the massive amount of money made by
) tells us that they won’t stay off the road for long.
One last job with more cars
Gone in 60 Seconds
is as memorable for the array of mechanical beauty on display.
It’s also one of the few movies where Nicolas Cage only has the second-worst haircut onscreen, first prize going to Angelina Jolie’s blond dreads.
You won't need to pull off one last job to rent
from DStv BoxOffice. It's only R25.
