In Sunday night’s episode of Idols, scores of Durban hopefuls turned up at uShaka Marine World in the hopes of becoming the next South African Idol.

Last week the judges found some gold in Johannesburg and so the expectations and the pressure for Durban to live up to the City of Gold were high. Contestants had to slip into the shark tank to audition but sadly many of them of them didn’t make it out unscathed. After the slow start , the golden tickets finally started flowing. While the auditions seemed to be gaining momentum, there had to be a few "hopefuls" who quickly changed that view.

One notable contestant was Michael Jackson, ahem we mean Vincent. He gave his best rendition of the late King of Pop’s track Beat It, along with a choreographed dance. Gareth challenged Vincent to go out and make R400 as a busker. If he did that, Cliff would match the figure.

So off Proverb and Vincent went and Vincent made the cash. Gareth, looking surprised, kept his word and said, “Here you go now beat it."

Other comments that were passed around the judging panel included a very memorable one from Randall: “I would rather go and swim with those sharks than do this again." Can you blame him?





Thabiso Mbatha "treated" the judges to a melody of some of the biggest female vocalists around including Adele, Celine Dion and Mariah Carey.

While Unathi thought he was cute, Randall and Gareth thought otherwise. It was a "No" for the youngster and when he did his post performance interview he had a few stern words for Randall. “I hope you know you’ve made my life into a living misery.”

Gospel singer Khaya Mthethwa impressed the most with Unathi declaring, “Finally we found a star."
