Steve Hofmeyr is everywhere at the moment. As Comedy Central gears up to air Africa’s first-ever Roast on Monday, the press is exploding in anticipation of South Africa’s own "Hof" being raked over the coals. Will Monday leave Steve a man in hiding, a right Pampoen with his tail between his legs? Or will he emerge victorious? We’re not giving anything away so you’ll have to wait for Monday, when you’ll be the judge.

We did however manage to get a word with the man in question, who at this stage seems pretty confident that we may throw him on the fire, but he’ll always be Die Baas van Die Plaas…



What could have possibly driven you to be Roast's first victim? I'm a fan of the show and I have a death wish. I like a good laugh, also at my own expense.

How rehearsed was the show? Were you caught by surprise during the taping? Yes. Only the writers knew what the sum total of the scripts looked like, to ensure no overlaps or repeated jokes. Nobody knew what was to be said about them, hence my temper flare and Kuli's post-Roast blues.

Did the Roasters act in good spirits, or did anybody go too far? I have holy cows too. I didn't like jokes about deceased friends. It's not funny. Vlismas feels it is. His job is to pretend that nothing phases him. It's short person’s behaviour.

What’s it been like post-Roast? What’s next for you, Steve? My life of touring and music carries on. I harbour a trickle of hope that laughing can heal a nation. Will my career survive The Roast? Hehe. I think so. But I should discourage my mom from tuning in on Monday 24th September.

Twitter is going nuts over who might be Roasted next. Who do you think the next victim should be? The ones I want are politicians, but they probably won't be seen dead on The Roast. Their egos won't hold. It was hard enough to herd a panel of semi-unknown wannabes together for my Roast.
