Hip TV’s Next Rated: Who’s Next?
We are really excited about the launch of Hip TV, an urban contemporary channel with exciting programming covering music and lifestyle on DStv channel 324. Stay tuned for an exciting mix of programming including ‘Next Rated’, which shines the spotlight on upcoming music acts expected to ‘blow up’ in the near future.

‘Next Rated’ is also one of the most coveted categories at the annual Hip Hop World Awards (The Headies) also organized by Hip TV’s parent company, Smooth Entertainment. We take a look at past Next Rated awardees and the careers they have had since winning.

Asa (2006)
Delivering the hit songs Jailer and Fire On The Mountain, Asa's internationally-acclaimed self-titled debut album gave credibility to The Headies’ Next Rated category and set the bar very high for subsequent awardees. Her second album, Beautiful Imperfection launched to rave reviews in 2011, confirming her place among Africa’s biggest musical exports like Angelique Kidjo and Youssour N’Dour.

Overdose (2007)
He may not be commercially acclaimed but Overdose (OD for short) has been in the industry since 2001 is often named amongst Nigeria’s greatest rappers. He’s credited with spitting clever punchlines on singles like I Like Your Way, Drinks In A Glass and Got To Love Me. Watch out for the collaborative album with Terry tha Rapman and Pherowshuz titled BANS, which is set to drop later this year.

Wande Coal (2008)
Spawning several popular tracks like Bumper To Bumper, You Bad and Kiss Your Hands, Wande Coal’s 2009 debut album, Mushin 2 Mo Hits  was a massive hit. Despite still unfulfilled rumors of a follow up album, he has remained in high demand delivering soulful hooks on hit tracks for artistes like D’Banj, Naeto C, Ikechukwu and the Mo Hits All Stars. He has also releases several singles including the massive club hits Kiss Your Hands (Remix), Go Low and The Kick.

Omawumi (2009)
We first took notice of Omawumi she emerged 1st Runner Up in the 2007 edition of the Idols West Africa contest. Her debut album aptly titled Wonder Woman received rave reviews when it dropped in 2009. Since then, she has gone on to perform and collaborate with other top local and international acts like Angie Stone, Tuface and P-Square. She released her sophomore album Lasso Of Truth earlier this year and it featured the hit singles Bottom Belle as well as the socially conscious If You Ask Me.

Skuki (2010)

This afro hip-hop duo is made up of talented brothers nicknamed “Peeshaun” and “Vavavoom”. Their first single Fire stayed on the Channel O Top 10 Chart for four months and retained the number one spot for four consecutive weeks. They’ve followed up with several hit tracks including Stamina with Mo’ Cheddah and Banger featuring DJ Zeez. Skuki is yet to drop a full album but their latest singles Voom-Va and Don’t Let Your Daddy Know are currently enjoying heavy rotation.

Wizkid (2011)
EME Records boss, Banky W was once quoted as saying “Wizkid was born to be a star” and we totally agree! Since the release of his first single Holla At Your Boy, the talented Wizkid hasn’t stopped dropping hit after massive hit. He has also become one of Nigeria’s most sought after artistes working with international superstars like Akon, Chris Brown and Rick Ross and continental stars like D’Banj, Sarkodie and so on. Even after bagging several awards and mouth-watering endorsement deals, Wizkid is showing no signs of relenting.

Davido (2012)
Talented singer / producer Davido first came under the spotlight when he released the single Back When  which featured Naeto C. But it was when the follow up single Dami Duro dropped, that his popularity and influence on the Nigerian music scene shot through the roof. After the release of his debut album O.B.O Genesis, Davido has gone on to tour the world and share the stage with music heavy weights like T-Pain and Fabulous. He has continued his hit making streak with several singles and collaborations including Gobe and Skelewu proving that he’s got what it takes to remain in the game for a long time to come.

As we get set for this year’s edition of The Headies scheduled for December 26, 2013, we can’t help wondering who will join the elite crop of Next Rated category winners.

In the meantime, stay tuned to Next Rated, showing Thursday at 3pm on Hip TV to peek into the crystal ball and discover tomorrow’s hit makers.
