Each year the fashion-forward folk among us step out in style at the Durban July. This year’s theme was A Material World, and eco-friendly fashion ensembles were expected in the name of going green.

On the fashion front the event disappointed miserably - far from what was anticipated, we saw frumpy dresses and dowdy hats that looked like they were fished out of a style-deprived black and white era gone bad.

Yes sometimes fashion means expecting the unexpected, but everyone who’s anyone has just got to know that they should never put on something they can't pull off.

The hype around the Durban July is equally, if not more, about the fashion than the racing and Twitter was abuzz as onlookers colorfully expressed their disappointment at the fashion meltdowns.

Don’t despair because it doesn’t seem as though all was lost on pointy pixie shoes and yester-year remakes. Some celebrities brought some serious swagger to the event.




And no, Survivor SA star Roxy Burger is no Lady Gaga, apparently she prefers to eat her food not wear it. The talk about her wearing a crocheted burger dress was definitely untrue. She actually wore an elegant black number.

So there was a glimmer of hope for a handful of people, who didn’t kill the buzz at the event. Hopefully this year’s fashion mishaps will not get repeated next year.
